The Washington Nationals placed right-hander Max Scherzer on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 12, with right groin inflammation on Tuesday.

Scherzer, 36, left in the first inning of Friday's game against the San Francisco Giants with the injury. He departed with one out after throwing 12 pitches.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner had a bullpen session cut short due to discomfort on Monday, and Washington decided to scratch Scherzer from his scheduled start on Wednesday.

Scherzer is 5-4 with a 2.21 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 13 starts for Washington this season.

In other player moves Tuesday, the Nationals selected the contract of right-hander Justin Miller from Triple-A Rochester and designated right-hander Rogelio Armenteros for assignment.

Miller, 34, went a combined 8-1 with a 3.71 ERA in 68 appearances over the 2018 and 2019 seasons for Washington. In 150 career games with the Detroit Tigers (2014), Colorado Rockies (2015-16) and Nationals, Miller is 13-5 with three saves and a 4.43 ERA.

Armenteros, 26, went 0-4 with a 5.83 ERA in seven starts for Rochester this season.
