WASHINGTON D.C.: The United States Post Office has begun providing check cashing services at post offices on the East Coast.
The service is designed to offer check cashing to low income customers who have limited access to banks.
Post offices set up for check cashing include branches in Falls Church, Virginia; Baltimore; the Bronx, New York; and Washington D.C.
Future plans might include expanding into more branches, along with offering financial services, such as payment of bills and automated teller machines.
Supporters of the new services say that it offers viable government-supported alternatives to check redemption at stores and salary day lending parties preying on susceptible sections of society by charging hefty fees, as well as interest rates.
